Oliver&Spike – we won’t repeat this!

Oliver&Spike won’t force repetitive puzzle game-play on you, that’s very high on our priority list! Don’t we all know the feeling of picking up/downloading a new game and get oliverfighting 300x231 Oliver&Spike we wont repeat this!super excited to try it out just to feel, after a while, that despite great design and puzzles, the actual game-play is still repeating itself in only slight variations? It’s then, when it turns into a slight hate/love relationship because the game is actually really good, the puzzles great but we still feel that there could be more than just different environments but the same objectives and options to use..

What if your game had changing and evolving game-play, challenging you in new ways constantly? What if the game-play was a mix integrating two genres but not overwhelming you with one or the other? Yeah, yeah, heard that before, right? Well, if you haven’t read about the basics of the Dimensions in Oliver&Spike: Dimension Jumpers, you can do so here, to understand the concept behind them before reading on.

Imagine that each Dimension is not only a full place to explore it’s also like a new game-play mechanic for itself. Once you enter a new Dimension a whole new set of skills are opening up to you but more importantly, new rules on how you can interact with your environment. On top of this, since you can stay in most Dimensions how long or short you want, these rules are yours to use and switch between whenever you need them (and believe us when we say you WILL need them icon wink Oliver&Spike we wont repeat this! ). Basically, it’s like having a different game in each dimension while being able to fast change the rules of the game by Dimension Jumping. Makes no sense? Then take a look at this little clip for a (very basic) idea how to use the switching on the first world and one of the very first times you will use dimension switching. In this case it’s to teach you the basics and to get to your objective. So don’t expect everything to be as straight forward and simple as this small teaser.

It’s your creativity that will get you ahead in the story.

We started to introduce Aria to you, the first cluster/world you will play in and its three Dimensions Aqual, Tera and Firma. The three first Dimensions are quite basic in order to make sure you get used to the dimension switching and all the different options you have available while switching.
Later in the game, Dimensions and their rules are not as simple as just jumping higher, double jump or being able to swim, oh no, nonono. We have quite complex challenges and rules ready for you and the Dimensions you are going to visit are going to be much more creative and tricky. While we do not want to spoil them for you, we give you some names and let you guess what the characteristics of the different Dimensions might be icon wink Oliver&Spike we wont repeat this!

Trougle Cluster: Nefaris, Nifris, Tox
Twadle Cluster: Treacle, Turvy, Tint

Now, over to you: Any ideas what the different dimensions could stand for?

That’s not all of course. The dimension jumping is wrapped into the adventure/platform game-play and, not to forget, the action part: here, a screenshot collection of only a few of the basic actions Oliver is able to do at the start of the game. As you progress there will be many more to unlock! Questions? Comments? Go head!:

  1. Wow, this game looks pretty good. I’m definitely going to check this out.

  2. Scratch that. I just learned that only a PC release is being planned. Such a shame, my computer is from the stone ages and would never be able to run this. Still, the game looks pretty sweet.

    • The game will come out for consoles first and PC/Mac at a later point in time :)
What made you think it was PC only?

      • Your video’s disclaimer… that’s not something you normally see on footage of products that are breathtakingly gorgeous.

You talk of not wanting to repeat game play mechanics. I’m sure you’ve also considered that some game play elements stay fun the entire game, and that introducing a game play mechanic just because it’s different then throwing it out can really leave people feeling like it was just thrown in. From what I can see, you’re talking about a system that gradually introduces new mechanics that you can use in combination with everything you’ve discovered up to this point- that has me very excited.

        • Hi Marcus :)

Well, we are still working on the look and feel of the game which includes shaders and light and particle effects. So non of the graphical approach is really fully polished but thanks a lot of the compliment.
Absolutely (in regards to the game play elements). As you said, it’s more like introducing more elements while the core game play is still there. However, each world has its own physical laws which define part of the game play and puzzle aspect of said environment. This leads to different challenges within the dimension jumping mechanics that add to the game and create a lot of variety. So you are pretty much spot on with your idea of what the system plays like.

  3. This game look awesome. I love the environment, the cartoon-like shader. Totally LOVE it :D .

  4. The game looks awesome! I definitely would get this game if it’s available on 3DS. (or Wii U, but I won’t get one until 2015)

Also, any chances for Oliver to move faster? (just my point of view, no offense meant )

Hope the best for the development , keep going! Hoping to get the final game!!

    • Hi Elena,
We totally agree on the movement speed and actually already worked on that. The Video shows a somewhat old build and we are currently working on the new demo build with adjusted speed :) Thanks for the comment and the feedback!

  5. Wowza. This looks AMAZING. I didn’t expect much when coming over from gonintendo, but what little I’ve seen is making it look like a must buy :D

  6. Oh my. This looks very good! It reminds me a bit of Banjo-Kazooie, which is easily one of my favorite games of all time. I hope there won’t be too many underwater parts though, because those usually feel kind of slow and boring, unless you find some way to make them fun and interesting.

Also yes, Oliver definitely needs to move faster than in the video, and I’m guessing Spike will have some powers as well? Because right now he seems pretty useless. Heh, you probably already planned all of this since you said we’d unlock new actions as we progress, but I’m just saying. I’m thinking maybe something similar to BK, R&C and J&D.

We really need more 3D platformers like this… so thanks for making it, I’ll look forward to it!

    • Thanks! We definitely understand your concerns. Water levels can be “dragging”.
We already worked on Oliver’s walk and run animations and speed :)
Spike will play his own role during certain parts of the game yes and since we are inspired by R&C we have a lot of things planned for him :)
      Good to get some feedback.

  7. My guesses for the levels:

    Nefaris= Fire

    Tox = Toxic swamp

The others I have no idea.

  8. Wow it looks great! It reminds me of Spyro, Rayman , Super Mario 64, Croc, Banjo&Kazooie and all the other Ps1/N64 3D-platformer.
For which consoles is this game?

  9. Wow! From the video, this game looks amazing. With mostly puzzles, I’m sure that you are right about the whole “always new idea” concept. Do you know if when it’ll come out into stores?

  10. Ok, I can even think about the secuel:
    Dimension and TIME jumpers!
    that would be crazy xD

  11. Well I’m really looking forward this game.
I really like the art, good mix of cellshading and classic 3D. The gameplay if done right can be really interesting. Hopefully dimension swap won’t be our tricky poney like the waterbag was in mario sunshine (like, you “can’t” die.)
    I’ll defintly buy this game.

Btw, will we do something with the dog or he’s just here for fun? I mean, will he be as important as kazooie in banjo kazooie :p?

    • Spike will play an important role both in puzzles and quests :)
We are also thinking about giving him an actual voice!
